German journalist Philip Winter comes with a case of writer's block when attempting to write an article about america. He decides while trying to book a flight, encounters a German woman and her nine year old girl Alice doing the same, and to come back to Germany. Both become friends (almost out of necessity) and also while the mum asks Winter to mind Alice temporarily, it immediately becomes evident Alice is going to undoubtedly be his responsibility for more than he ever expected. After returning to Europe, the naive friendship between Alice and Winter climbs while they travel through many different cities within a quest for Alice's grandma.
