Daryll Deever works as a janitor in a New York office building and admires Tony Sokolow, a TV news reporter. When a wealthy man is assassinated in Daryll's building, Tony arrives to cover the story and Daryll introduces himself to her. Tony pursues him, thinking he might know something about the crime, and pretends to know it in order to keep seeing her. The killers are watching as Daryll and Tony play this game, assuming they know more about the crime than they do.
