Natalie enables Jeff, a classmate who fled home following an altercation with his stepfather, to stay at her house while her father is away on a business trip. Natalie soon begins dating Jeff's friend James Casey, who proves to be less dependable than she believes, while her closest friend Polly falls in love with baseball player Zoo Knudsen.
