When Gabriel and Emilie happen to meet by coincidence, he offers her a ride, and they spend the evening talking, laughing, and getting along famously. Emilie refuses Gabriel's offer of "a kiss without consequences" at the end of the night. Emilie warns him that the kiss could have unintended effects and gives him a narrative, told in flashbacks, about the impossibility of satisfying one's wants without hurting someone else's life.
