Stingo, a young writer, moves into Brooklyn from 1947 to begin work. As he becomes friendly with her fan Nathan and Sophie, he learns that she is really just a Holocaust survivor. Flashbacks show her story. From the present, Nathan's relationship and Sophie unravels Nathan's fragile mental condition becomes ever more apparent and as Stingo develops closer to Sophie.
