At the beginning of the movie we hear which earthworms can be called to the surface together with electricity, but it turns them into flesh-eaters that are barbarous. Sure enough, a storm which nighttime causes the bottom to break and touch, drawing on hundreds of worms out of the earth, and into town by which they fast start munching on the natives.
