This is the third film in a trilogy starring Antoine Doinel, the fictional persona of François Truffaut. The tale picks up following Antoine's discharge from the military. Antoine gets a job as a security guard through Christine's dad, but he doesn't last long in that role. A chance encounter with a private investigator leads Antoine to fall for the attractive wife of his boss, Fabienne, and force himself to choose between her and Christine.
