During World War I, a young French solider is filled with remorse after he is responsible for the death of a German solider who, like himself, is a musically brilliant conscript. Both soldiers had attended the same music conservatory in France during their time in the French military. The fact that the incident took place during combat does not absolve him of responsibility for what happened. He embarks on a journey to Germany in order to meet the man's relatives.
