Eddie (Voight), a war veteran and a maintenance worker at the Ruby Pier amusement park, dies on his 83rd birthday while attempting to save a young girl who is trapped beneath a crumbling roller coaster. In the afterlife, he is greeted by five persons who have ties to his corporeal existence and who assist him in understanding the significance of his life.
