Don Knotts plays Roy Fleming, a kiddie-ride operator terrified of heights. Roy grudgingly flies to Houston after finding his father signed him up for the space program, only to learn he's a janitor, not an astronaut. Roy, eager to please his father, pretends to be an astronaut to his family and friends. Roy faces his anxieties as NASA launches a layperson into orbit to test an automated spacecraft.
