In post war Vienna, Austria, Holly Martins arrives penniless as being a guest of his youth chum Harry Lime, only to learn he's expired. Martins develops a conspiracy theory later learning of a"third person" present in the time of Harry's departure, running into disturbance from British officer Major Calloway, also falling head over heels for Harry's grief-stricken lover, Anna.
